CHRIS RICHTER:

Tides & Trails

July 7 – August 5, 2023

Opening Reception with the Artist, Friday, July 7, 5-7pm

Golden Hour, 2023, Oil on canvas on board, 60 x60 inches

Santa Fe, NM– Chiaroscuro is pleased to feature Chris Richter for a solo exhibition in the main gallery titled, Tides & Trails. This exhibition is the culmination of Richter’s efforts over the past 18 months, pushing his nature inspired abstractions to the next level. The show will feature over a dozen large and small scale oil on canvas, and oil on paper pieces. Please join us for the artist’s reception on Friday, July 7, from 5-7pm.

Tides & Trails continues Richter’s long time Reveal series with a renewed emphasis on the light & color, metallic & iridescent, and warm & cool tones. One of the primary focuses of this work, Richter explains is, “Light as a source of inspiration. Light brings color and insight to all things; a certain kind of truth.” Through his additive and reductive painting process, Richter builds multiple layers of color over extended periods of time, and then goes back into the paint, once dry, and reduces away the color, shaping the image to render his interpretation of light falling on the landscape. With artwork titles like, Silvery Sea, Iridescent Shells, Sea Glass Amber, and Emerald Glow, you can begin to understand the overtones of the abstract paintings. Another aspect of the work is the redirecting of foreground and background perceptions as his color and form contrasts between warm and cool variances that cohesively contrast and contradict. Through his mark making the landscape is transformed into a feeling or moment of illumination.

This is Chris Richter’s fifth solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro. Richter’s career started with representational landscape oil paintings, in the early 2000’s, before his nature based imagery and ideas moved into abstraction in 2012. With this current exhibition, his exploration of landscape inspired themes of color, light and form, continue to evolve deeper into abstraction. Influenced by the Light and Space movement in Southern California in the 1960s & 1970s, which embodied the perceptual phenomena of light, Richter draws inspiration and form from the natural surroundings outside his studio with close proximity to the Pacific Ocean.

CHRIS RICHTER’s Tides & Trails will run concurrently with MARGEAUX’s, The Weight of Things, special installation, July 7 – August 5, 2023. Please join the artists for our opening receptions, Friday, July 7 from 5-7pm.
