Contemporary Abstraction has always been a main focus of Chiaroscuro and its interesting to note that within the 20 represented artists, at least half of the artwork is in some way inspired by, or linked to Nature. The "great outdoors" specifically. The contemporary photograph of Renate Aller is a perfect place to start, but the strain of nature moves through the abstract works of Yuki Murata with distant horizons drawn from earth soil mediums to Gayle Crites' earth oxides painted on hand pounded bark paper (tapa) pieces. Chris Richter and Daniel Brice are abstract painters that do not directly render the landscape, yet their artwork's underlying structure, color, and texture flow freely out of a reverence for and inspiration of the land, giving people a frame of reference to experience the abstraction on paper, board and canvas. The show also includes guest artists, Walter W. Nelson, and Bryan Whitney. Both of these artists work with photographic imagery and manipulate and transform these images into unique abstractions. Penny Truitt's abstract ceramic and steel sculptures speak to territory boundaries, and Borderland walls and fences which are very much apart of the Southwestern desert landscape.
