We just received 6 ink on paper, unique paintings, from Daniel Brice, from his new Esperanto Series. Important for Brice in this body of work is the line and repetition of line, which is used to set up a visual dichotomy between the verticality of letters and words, comic strip graphics, and film frames, and the horizon line’s strong horizontal orientation.

Brice explains, “The glimpse of a primal earth/sky, ocean/sky horizon plays an important role in these compositions while the configuration of marks in a vertical pattern holding a relationship to letters/words, type based visuals. I held true to the idea that my image making is a personal language that’s constantly evolving and I hadn't thought or spoken visually in this way before. So the word esperanto, although meaning something far different for those who know of the constructed language, is used here in a personal way of acknowledging what these compositions are becoming to me. A personal visual constructed language.”
