Tim Jag: Dualities Series
Left, right; up, down; night, day; yes, no, are some of the dualities that abstract painter Tim Jag draws inspiration from in his latest body of work on view at Chiaroscuro. Jag explains:
“As paintings, the Dualities Series is an attempt to develop a pictorial language based on an abstract tradition of field versus ground, or flat versus depth, employing architectonic geometry, pure colors, and blacks and whites to arrive at a harmonious design.”
Moving paint around the canvas, strong brushy strokes are juxtaposed with crisp solid fields of color that “float” in the sea of strokes. Jag’s painting process leads to “a building up of pictorial movement and a physicality to the picture plane, at once full of directional inertia and rhythm, yet rigid and stabilizing in its relationships of geometric right angles.”
Based in Santa Fe, and always painting in series, Tim Jag is known for his distinct and varied thematic output, exploring radically different compositions and color experiments, yet holding a signature style and sensibility. This is Jag’s first major solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro.
Mike Stack: Distances
Like a runner putting one foot in front of the other, moving forward in space, Mike Stack’s paintings pull your eyes through thin “steps” of closely related color variations, towards a distant point or sensation of movement in color. His uniform thin strips of paint build upon each other, engaging the viewer into a seemingly endless slight chromatic variation of color.
Stack explains, “Navigating endless variations and combinations, color perceptions continually change, come into focus, and change again. Their interconnectivity gives life to the visual world. My paintings and how I go about making them, is an internal response to the sensation of rhythmic color and light as an entity unto itself.”
Over the last year, Stack has been working on “Distances,” producing a cohesive collection of six paintings that revolve around each other, sharing a similar linear structure, yet uncovering endless color variation within a tight construct of red and blue.
Based in Tucson, AZ, Mike Stack is a full time painter and educator who is a member of the art faculty at Pima Community College, Tucson, AZ, since 2002. Stack has shown in the Southwest and Northeast regions, with recent work featured in museum shows: Arizona Biennial 2013, Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ, and Flirting with Abstraction, 2011-12, Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA. This is Stack’s first major solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro.
