Santa Fe, NM – Ocean | Desert is Renate Aller’s third major solo exhibition of large-scale color photographs at Chiaroscuro. As with her previous work, this exhibition is a focused exploration of the specific landscapes mentioned and their relationship to each other and to the viewer.

What these expansive landscapes, which lie hundreds of miles apart, have in common is immediately evident: the horizon line, their vastness, and a “fluid” space shaped by wind and sky. It’s evident that these places have a connection, a shared history. By pairing the works to create diptychs, Aller examines and amplifies their immediate connections as well as their differences. This dichotomy produces a visual tension which allows a narrative to build and yet the imagery remains in perfect juxtaposition. In some of the works the human figure enters the equation, occupying and in a sense owning the desert landscape.

The exhibition will consist of three different scales of color photographs presented individually and as diptychs. Ocean | Desert is presented in conjunction with the release of a 136-page monograph of the same title published by Radius Books.
