Walter W. Nelson: The Black Place – Two Seasons

May 2 – 31

Opening Reception and Book Signing: Friday, May 2, 5-7pm

Santa Fe, NM – Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art presents the photography of Walter W. Nelson’s, The Black Place – Two Seasons. This exhibition of 25 large scale photographs is presented in conjunction with the highly anticipated publication of the book by the same name from Museum of New Mexico Press. Nelson explores the mystic beauty of The Black Place in northwestern New Mexico, territory that Georgia O’Keeffe once described as “A mile of elephants with gray hills and white sand at their feet.” These remote and uninhabited black, grey, pink, yellow and white land formations are chronicled in detail by Nelson, who has been visiting and photographing The Black Place for over 20 years.

Between the inspiration of O’Keeffe’s drawings and paintings made there throughout her career and a study of the unique geological history of the area, Nelson has immersed himself in the landscape. His numerous visits and careful observations have fostered a deep and personal understanding of this mysterious place that is evident in his photography. While he has been photographing The Black Place for twenty years, with both a traditional 8 x 10 view camera and more recently digital format, this exhibition consists of recent large scale, digital-capture color photographs.

The Black Place – Two Seasons, published by Museum of New Mexico Press, includes an essay by established local author Douglas Preston and an introduction by New Mexico Museum of Art curator of photography Katherine Ware.  Nelson, Preston and Ware will be signing books at the reception.
