Spring Thaw Group Show
March 28 – April 26, 2014
Opening Reception: March 28, 5-7pm
Chiaroscuro presents its fifth annual Spring Thaw group show, featuring an eclectic selection of new artwork from four local guest artists: Jamie Hamilton, David Hoptman, Carl Moore and Leah Siegel. Over the past 6 months, Chiaroscuro director, John Addison, has been visiting local artists’ studios and came up with this selection of diverse contemporary work, made in Santa Fe, from incredibly talented and otherwise unrepresented artists.
Addison explains, “This year’s Spring Thaw exhibition touches the ‘tip of the iceberg’ when you consider the quality and quantity of contemporary art production in Santa Fe by artists without gallery representation. Nevertheless, it’s a great way to start our 2014 exhibition schedule, and discover the depth and breadth of the Santa Fe art scene.”
Jamie Hamilton (sculptor) is a young but established artist working in a variety of mediums and scales. Hamilton will create a site-specific installation in the main gallery space, as well as several smaller metal sculptures. From his Pecos studio, Hamilton is currently working on his MFA degree through the acclaimed Transart program based in Berlin and New York.
David Hoptman (sculptor, photographer, and printmaker) will present a concise body of work of bronze sculptural vessels. These beautifully crafted abstract forms feel ancient and contemporary at once. Originally made from clay, the organic forms are developed slowly, and, when translated into bronze with rich patinas, transform into jewel-like sculpture.
Carl Moore (photographer) will present a gripping portrait of Cuba. Large scale, toned photographs printed on Tyvek reveal the artist’s passion for the country and its people. Approximately 24 documentary/fine art photos taken over the past year show a vibrant community and Moore’s skilled eye as a photographer.
Leah Siegel (photographer and mixed media artist) will present compelling digitally constructed abstractions from photographs. Color, pattern, and repetition come together in these works which ride the line between Native American textile designs and a high-tech aesthetic. Printed on paper and mounted on aluminum, Siegel’s “Re-Visions” series is a refreshingly original use of imagery and technology.
