Santa Fe – Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Daniel Brice, Paintings, a solo exhibition July 8 – August 6. The opening reception is Friday, July 8, 5-7pm. Paintings is our feature abstract painting show of the summer. We are presenting over a dozen new color-field paintings at our main space at 702½ Canyon Rd.
.
Daniel Brice’s work has evolved, and this exhibition marks a significant departure from his paintings over the last 15 years. Previously, Brice’s linear paintings focused on the tension and release of a single black graphite line moving across a spare, off-white abstract ground. The simple movement of his line activated a series of subtle spatial relationships within his paintings, creating infinite visual interest. Over the past year and a half, Brice’s self-imposed challenge was to create the same “activated space” without the line as trigger.
.
Through working and reworking the new paintings in this exhibition, Brice has created a strongly resolved body of work. What has emerged, instead of the line, are large planes of saturated color, some opaque, some transparent. These works immerse the viewer in varied yet subtle surfaces, and tap into the emotion of pure color and proportion.
Brice’s July show will feature over a dozen of these new paintings, which he refers to as the Oxnard Series. This is Brice’s third major exhibition at Chiaroscuro.
.
The July 4 by 4 series will include four or more new works by artists: Renate Aller, Siddiq Khan, Phillis Ideal, and Flo Perkins.
