Santa Fe – Mapping, opening in our main space at 702 ½ Canyon Road on June 10th and continuing through July 2, 2011, is an exhibition of mixed-media paintings by Santa Fe-based artist Seth Anderson. The public reception for this exhibition is Friday, June 10, 5-7pm.

The foundation for this new body of work builds upon Anderson’s many years of abstract line painting. Previously, undulating lines, colors, and textures formed a web of marks that represented structures like DNA strands and highway routes. In his new work, Anderson includes this abstract line vocabulary, yet takes it a step further.

Mapping is a body of work where the line not only describes abstract ideas but also corresponds to actual topography, property boundaries, and architectural elements, alongside survey grids, highways, and river ways. The Southwest plays a major role in this work, as outlines of 19th century land grants, states and counties are collaged on top of modern highways and suburban subdivisions. Mapping falls into two groups of work: The first group has large opaque shapes taken directly from political boundary lines in the 1800s, like the shape of New Mexico or Arizona, or Santa Fe and Bernalillo Counties. The second group juxtaposes a bold calligraphic element in response to the literal topographic elements layered beneath it. The layering of both the old and the new in Anderson’s map-paintings creates, according to the artist, “new frontiers that emerge out of the past yet also redefine the future.”

This solo exhibition consists of nine paintings from small to large scale, and is his third major exhibition with Chiaroscuro. The artist will be present at opening reception, June 10th, 5-7pm.

From June through October, running concurrently with the solo exhibitions, Chiaroscuro is presenting Features, small tightly curated group shows of new work from gallery artists. From June 10-July 2, Features artists are: Chip Dunahugh, Bebe Krimmer, Kim Kulow-Jones, and Gretchen Wachs.
