Bebe Krimmer: The Santa Fe Years

March 27 to April 25, 2015

Opening Reception, Friday, March 27, 5-7pm

Santa Fe, NM – Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art is pleased to open its 2015 season with a retrospective exhibition of painting by the late Bebe Krimmer (1930-2014). Chiaroscuro has represented Krimmer since 2008 and featured her in two major solo exhibitions, Principia in 2010 and Spatial Order in 2013. A prolific artist her whole life, this exhibition focuses on the years Krimmer lived and painted in Santa Fe, 1994 -2014. During that time Krimmer’s work ranges from her earlier narrative collage and encaustics, to later color field and astronomical inspired abstractions

Krimmer last show, Spatial Order was a culmination of sorts, distilling ideas and techniques Krimmer had been developing for years. Put simply, all the elements of her long career as a painter came together in that show; repetition, collage, color, paint-handling, scale and content. The paintings all contain an element of discovery. As you approach the work, the surface transforms from a riot of abstract marks into a formal structure forming a hypnotic rhythm of collaged elements. The white-on-white and black-on-black pieces appear minimal from a distance, then open up into great detail as you step closer.

It is within the context of the Spatial Order artwork that makes looking back on the earlier pieces so engaging. You can see visual elements and techniques from ten to twenty years earlier take root and mature before your eyes.

The exhibition will consist of approximately 25 pieces in various sizes and mediums. All the artwork on view is directly from the Krimmer Estate. Plus, the exhibition includes an illustrated catalog of all the artwork in Krimmer’s studio at the time of her passing.
