About the Artist

"Australian Contemporary Indigenous Art -Now, Part 2" is a major exhibition scheduled for July 2012 at Chiaroscuro. Please check back for exact dates and artists presented. The show builds upon the themes and success of our 2010 show. We are pleased to be working again with Vivien Anderson in Melborne, curating an exciting and informative exhibition.

Notes from 2010 Exhibition:

Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, in association with Vivien Anderson Gallery, Melborne, is pleased to present “Australian Contemporary Indigenous Art – Now.” This unique exhibition introduces master artists of the central western desert movement and the highly respected Yolngu artists of northeast Arnhemland, to the American southwest. It is a joint venture showcasing the quality and depth of Australian Indigenous Art represented by Vivien Anderson Gallery.

Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art occupies a unique place in the diverse landscape of Santa Fe galleries by focusing on contemporary abstraction from locally and nationally recognized artists. Within this group of forty represented artists, the largest subgroup includes work by contemporary Native American artists. These Native artists, mostly from the surrounding New Mexico pueblos, often draw from traditional forms and themes using a contemporary visual vocabulary. This new vocabulary is grounded in cultural perspectives, but expresses itself through the lens of modern life and the evolving contemporary identity of Native American artists.

As a gallery at the center of this contemporary Native dialog, Chiaroscuro becomes a natural choice to introduce and present Australian Contemporary Indigenous Art to our regional and national audience. Chiaroscuro is proud to partner with Vivien Anderson galleries to help globally expand the market for contemporary indigenous artworks, and to introduce Santa Fe to these accomplished Aboriginal artists.
